The hotel has two restaurants. On the ground floor, they have the Marketplace, which offers both indoor and outdoor dining on the terrace, offering international cuisine, including pasta, pizzas and burgers. It is open 24 hours. About this area
Kenya's capital, Nairobi, is an unavoidable stopover as most international flights arrive at night. Most people are keen to head out on safari as soon as possible and tend not to spend much time in the city. But for those who choose to spend an extra night or two to adjust to time changes, there are some great hotels and restaurants, and the shopping opportunities—in small shops, malls or outdoor curio markets —can be very good. The Sheldrick Trust needs to be booked well in advance, especially if you want a private experience.

Rebuilt and refurbished in 2023, Naboisho Camp offers nine spacious and comfortable tents. There is a small swimming pool to cool off in in the heat of the day.
The main communal area, a thatched sitting room and dining room provide a lovely vantage point from which to watch the nearby waterhole. Most of the vegetation in the immediate vicinity of the camp has been left as wild as possible providing both shade and a habitat for birds and small – and sometimes larger – animals.
The nine generous tented suites offer comfortable king-sized beds (twin beds are available), they have ensuite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor hot running showers
It is possible to do night drives here and you can also explore the bush on foot, accompanied by an expert guide and tracker. This is an excellent place to enjoy walks as there are some stunning areas. There is the option to do some really long walks, which enable you to access areas that are inaccessible by car
About this area
Naboisho Conservancy is a conservation success story. It is a community conservancy comprised of land leased from 500 different local families and spans over 55,000 acres. Over the last two decades, wildlife numbers have increased, and predator numbers have bounced back to the point that Naboisho is one of the very best places in Africa to see predators. Access to the conservancy is limited, and the area boasts relatively low tourist numbers, making it easy to avoid the crowds. There is a good chance that you will have sightings to yourselves. The conservancy, part of the Mara Serengeti ecosystem, offers a classic Mara landscape with rolling hills and open plains interspersed with small streams and patches of woodland. Plains game is excellent here, too, and elephant numbers are slowly returning. It is great country for walking, and it is also possible to do night drives.

The lodge's main area enjoys impressive views of the crater floor below. Each guest suite includes a small seating area and a slow-burning log stove.
The property's communal pool is heated using specially developed solar panels and sits behind floor-to-ceiling windows with expansive views over this picturesque wildlife territory.
Osonjoi is conveniently located close to the quiet Lemala crater access road on the eastern side of the Crater Wall, a key advantage of staying at here is the quick and easy drive down on to the crater floor with the opportunity to get into the crater as early as possible.
We like to include this lodge on itineraries because of this access which allows you to be down on the crater floor in less than 20 minutes with the advantage of enjoying the crater floor before it gets busy.
About this area
Ngorongoro crater is a vast, perfect, complete caldera 2,000 feet deep and 10 miles across. The highlands where it sits rise to over 9,000ft and are covered in lush and varied forests fed by moisture-laden clouds. The area sits within the 3,200 square mile Ngorongoro Conservation area, bordering the vast Serengeti National Park. You can descend into the crater for a drive amongst many large numbers of various wildlife. Wildebeest, Zebra, Grant's and Thomson gazelle abound, and you can almost always see elephants, flamingos, rhinos and lions. It can give one the sense of being in a picturesque, magical Eden. It truly deserves to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's eighth wonder.
However, the area can be very crowded with tourists, and game drives are best here during the low season. We suggest avoiding game drives here during the high season, as the masses can detract from the beauty of the place. One of the finest things you can do here is hike along the crater rim or through the surrounding highlands. Not only do you avoid the crowds by walking, but it is one of the nicest ways to see the incredible views, feel the surroundings, and also encounter some of the local Masai who live in the area and go about their daily lives in this beautiful landscape.
Tanzania
Ndutu Safari Lodge offers an inexpensive, good value, no frills, central base from which to explore the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the northern section of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The camp has thirty-four humble stone and thatch en-suite cottages extending from the central bar and dining area. Each cottage has a private veranda looking out onto the Lake Ndutu.
Located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, bordering the Serengeti, the perennial Masek Lake and the seasonal Ndutu Lake support wonderful birds and fabulous resident wildlife.
About this area
The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is a vast expanse of sprawling grasslands crisscrossed with the green veins of seasonal watercourses and dotted with grazing herds of game. An area of roughly 15,000 km sq, it is a jewel within the Greater Serengeti ecosystem and a haven for wildlife. In this vast wilderness you feel you can explore forever and never tire of it.
Vast short-grass plains cover the south of Serengeti National Park, stretching into the north of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Maswa Game Reserve. The majority of this area is flat open savannah, dotted with occasional small rocky outcrops, Kopjes. The plains are alive with grazing wildebeest from around late-November to April, although the precise timing of the migration is entirely dependent upon rainfall patterns each An estimated two million wildebeest, half a million zebras, and countless other herbivores traverse the ecosystem during this time.
Tanzania
This small, tented camp has extensive views over the endless sweeping plains surrounding it. There are 11 modern safari tents with spacious verandas and beautiful interiors, (including a family unit) spread on either side of the main areas. With heavy stone walls and taut, multi-peaked cream canvas awnings, they are imposing structures quite unlike any other camp.
In July 2023, Namiri Plains opened the Namiri Retreats, two private tented villas with a private main area and swimming pool. The design and style of the two villas echo the main lodge, offering a more exclusive and luxurious experience at Namiri. They come with private chefs, butlers, and guides.
About this area
The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is a huge expanse of sprawling grasslands crisscrossed with the green veins of seasonal watercourses and dotted with grazing herds of game. An area of roughly 15,000 km sq., it is a jewel within the Greater Serengeti ecosystem and a haven for wildlife.
The vast spaces of the eastern short grass plains will take your breath away. The plains are dotted with dramatic rocky outcrops. The Ngare Nanyuki underground river in the eastern Serengeti creates pockets of permanent water that support year-round game concentrations of plains game; the predator densities are incredible, especially for lions and cheetah.
If you visit between November and May, you may be fortunate enough to catch the migration as it passes through.
At its most spectacular in East Africa, the Great Rift Valley was formed some 20 million years ago and is a dramatically beautiful land of contrasts from the shores of the Indian Ocean with its white sandy beaches and coral reefs to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya and the wild and vast deserts of the north.
With year-round access to wildlife, there is no other country in Africa where one can see such an immense variety of birds, mammals and landscapes. Our favourite itineraries in Kenya combine time in our private mobile tented camp with stays at some of the best lodges on the continent.
We will include well-known areas, such as the Mara, in your itinerary and incorporate some of the more remote areas off the beaten trail. We love northern Kenya with its arid wilderness and animals, including Grevy’s Zebra and Reticulated Giraffe, which are endemic to the area.
We can visit the central highlands for a total change of pace. The Aberdare Mountains rise to over 12,000ft, climbing through montane forest to bamboo and moor lands, wildly different from the savannahs to the north. Mount Kenya is a playground for mountaineers, climbers and hikers, and its trout-filled tarns provide good fishing.
Kenya offers an incredibly diverse range of cultural experiences, from bustling modern cities to rural villages. We can visit the Masai, Samburu, Boran and Turkana, to mention a few, and experience first-hand the tug between the past and the future.
During the greener months - from December to May - the great wildebeest migration takes place in the southern Serengeti and on the short grass plains of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the animals in their tens of thousands come to calve. This incredible spectacle is played out on the vast horizonless plains and offers an unparalleled safari experience. Combine this with a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world, and Olduvai Gorge, where Lara’s grandparents, Drs. Mary and Louis Leakey made many of their initial discoveries of early hominids.
In the dry season - from late July to mid–October - southern and central Tanzania come into their own. Our favourite dry season areas in Tanzania include Ruaha, Tarangire, Katavi and Nyerere National Park. As the surrounding areas become parched, vast numbers of animals move in towards the last remaining water, resulting in concentrated numbers of animals. There are some excellent opportunities to walk in true wilderness.
If you go to southern Tanzania, a trip to the Mahale Mountains National Park to see the chimpanzees is well worth the effort. Hiking through the forest and tracking the chimps is an incredible experience, and spending time with them is a privilege. The mountains rise from the shores of Lake Tanganyika, whose crystal clear water is full of dozens of different species of fish and whose beaches are tranquil and picturesque.
Tanzania is different in the dry and wet seasons, and the best itineraries reflect this.
