Olakira Camp is a semi-permanent tented camp that moves twice a year between two locations within Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. Between June and October, the camp relocates from Ndutu in the south to the northern Serengeti in time to catch the migration on its way to and from the Mara.
We love the camp's location during these months, giving one easy access to the river and the less crowded areas to the east towards Bologonja and the beautiful kopjes of Wogakuria. It is a great base to witness the migration and the resident game, including rare black rhinos.
Olakira is small and traditional, with just nine tents. Each boasts a screened-in verandah, offering the option of sleeping under the stars. They are spacious and comfortable on raised decks with wooden floors, en-suite flush toilets, and solar-powered hot showers. For families, one of the tents can sleep up to six people with two adjoining tents.
The mess has comfortable seating, a dining area, a small library, and an outdoor campfire in the evening. The small size and friendly staff create an intimate and authentic safari experience. Simple tented camps like this allow one to feel more connected to nature.
About This Area
The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is a vast expanse of sprawling grasslands crisscrossed with the green veins of seasonal watercourses and dotted with grazing herds of game. An area of roughly 15,000 km sq, it is a jewel within the Greater Serengeti ecosystem and a haven for wildlife. In this vast wilderness you feel you can explore forever and never tire of it.
The northern Serengeti is home to good numbers of local resident wildlife throughout the year; it is a fantastic location for predators and the river is a permanent home for hippos and crocodiles. From mid-July to November, it hosts the great herds migrating between Kenya and Tanzania. An estimated two million wildebeest, half a million zebras, and countless other herbivores traverse the ecosystem during this time.
The area along the river can be very busy during July, August and September which are the peak months for wildebeest crossings which is something to keep in mind when choosing a time to visit.
