Okavango Explorers Camp
Okavango Delta
Botswana
Okavango Explorers Camp is a classic safari camp built by Great Plains at the intersection of the upper Okavango Delta water system and the famed Selinda Spillway; the camp's location is a unique combination of two iconic ecosystems. The 130,000-hectare Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana is a prime predator and elephant habitat.
The camp's location was chosen for its access to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the region, along the southernmost section of Selinda Spillway. Lion, leopard and wild dogs hunt these parts regularly. There are good densities of giraffe, buffalo and exciting and rare antelope like roan, sable and eland. At the peak of the dry season in late September, the Selinda Reserve has been documented to be home to over 9,000 elephants concentrated along this river system. For lovers of elephants, this is the place to be in the dry season. The area has phenomenal birdlife.
It is a small, unpretentious camp managed by a knowledgeable team. It is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a wilderness experience in a high-quality and comfortable traditional tented camp.
The main area of the camp is an open-sided tent with a communal dining table and bar and comfortable sitting room. The camp has just six Meru-style tents, which can be made up as doubles or twins. The canvas-walled open-air bathroom at the back of each tent has a flush toilet and an old-school bucket shower.
Okavango Explorers Camp activities include day and night game drives; there is also a strong focus on walking and canoeing (water levels permitting). Walking is best between May and October when there is good visibility. Canoeing occurs on the seasonally flooded Selinda Spillway, usually between May and September when water levels are sufficiently high.
About This Area
The Okavango Delta was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. It is the world's largest inland Delta. During the flood season, waters push into Botswana from Angola, transforming the Kalahari into a lush oasis teeming with life.
The Delta is home to a wide variety of vegetation, including reed beds, papyrus swamps, and grasslands. These provide habitat for an astonishing array of wildlife, from large mammals like elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards and hippos, to crocodiles, teeny frogs, fish, and numerous bird species. It is a thriving ecosystem adapted to its seasonal fluctuations.
The water experience includes gliding silently through the Delta's channels as you are poled along in "mokoros" or canoes and exhilarating adventures in much faster motor-powered aluminium speedboats. The land experience usually occurs in open Landrovers centering around wildlife with walks in some areas
