Situated on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve, Kulala Desert Lodge has spectacular views over the Namib Sand Sea and the Namib-Naukluft Mountains.
The exclusivity of a private reserve makes the setting feel special, and with its own private entrance into the Namib-Naukluft National Park, Kulala Desert Lodge is amongst the best placed lodges for visiting Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei.
The main area of the lodge has been designed to minimise the desert heat. The 23 guest chalets are built in canvas and wood with a thatched roof, and raised slightly off the ground to allow a through flow of air. The rooms each have a ceiling fan which go a little way to keeping the rooms somewhat cooler during the hottest months. At the back of each chalet, a stepladder leads up to a private roof terrace where guests can sleep out under the stars in comfortable bedrolls and enjoy the desert breeze..
The most popular thing to do here is a guided morning drive into the dunes. You can also enjoy nature walks, and sundowner drives.
Temperature:
May, June, July & August are the coolest months and the average afternoon temperature is 25°C. Areas at lower altitude, such as Sossusvlei, can be substantially hotter. It is cold in the early morning, with temperatures around 9°C.
In September & October temperatures increase, they can exceed 38°C. Early mornings are cooler.
About This Area
The Kulala Wilderness Reserve, spanning over 37,000 hectares, is known for its striking landscapes, including red dunes and unique desert ecosystems. The reserve is home to desert-adapted wildlife like oryx, springbok, and meerkats, as well as various bird species. Most guest who stay here do so to position to go into the Namib-Naukluft National Park.
Sossusvlei is a stunning salt and clay pan, located in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, famous for its towering red sand dunes, some of the tallest in the world. These dunes, shaped by the wind over millennia, can reach heights of over 300 meters. The vibrant colors of the dunes, especially at sunrise and sunset, create a breathtaking and surreal landscape. Nearby, Deadvlei, a clay pan with dead camel thorn trees, is also a popular attraction. The area supports unique desert-adapted wildlife like oryx and springbok. Visitors can explore the area through hiking, 4x4 excursions, or even hot air balloon rides, making it a must-see destination for nature lovers and photographers.
