Kitich Forest Camp

Mathews Range

Kenya

Log Out

Kitich Forest Camp is a small tented camp tucked into the afro- montane forests of the Mathews Range on the banks of the Ngeng River.

Far off the beaten track it offers a fantastic bush experience, with bountiful bird and plant life. The camp specialises in walks accompanied by local Samburu guides that take you through the forested hills and along the river bank. It is not unusual to encounter elephants while hiking. The forest is alive with birdlife, dazzling butterflies and plants, including prehistoric cycads.

The central parts of the camp consist of a simple, wood-shingle roofed, open-plan dining and sitting room. Guests at Kitich usually eat together at the large communal dining table.

The eight traditional guest tents are set on concrete plinths built along the southern river bank with pretty views of the river and forest beyond. The tents each have en-suite open-air bathrooms with traditional safari bucket showers.

The main activity here is guided forest walks. The forest is home to 150 varieties of butterflies and more than 350 bird species. Prehistoric cycad plants dot the landscape. You can fly fish in the streams, visit the market at the bottom of the hill, or use it as an excellent base to explore further afield by helicopter.

Kitich Forest Camp is one of our favourite camps; it is best suited to guests looking for an authentic safari adventure without too many frills. The focus here is not wildlife.

About This Area

The Mathews Range Forest Reserve is a beautiful densely forested Afro-montane “sky island,” a chain of granite mountains whose peaks rise up to 2500 meters.

The higher elevations of the region enjoy a much milder climate compared to the surrounding savanna, which is characterized by hot, dry conditions. The higher areas with their forests act as an oasis for wildlife during the dry season, especially elephants, which migrate annually up and down the slopes.

The Mathews range is protected by the Mathews Range Forest Reserve, which lies within the 900km² Namunyak Wildlife Community Conservancy, a Samburu community conservancy.
