Encounter Mara

Naboisho Conservancy

Kenya

Log Out

Encounter Mara camp is a classic tented camp tucked away in a shady forest of orange-leaf croton and Euclea trees in a pretty valley with a seasonal stream. Each of the ten guest tents has views onto small clearings. The lack of a grand view is more than made up for by its amazing central location in Naboisho Conservancy. It allows you quick access to all areas of the conservancy and all the game that lives there.

The camp has ten simple but comfortable guest tents (one of which is a family tent with adjoining sleeping units). Each has an ensuite bathroom with a safari bucket shower, plumbed basin, and a loo.

The main areas at Encounter Mara consist of two separate tents, one for dining, with a large communal dining table, and one as a sitting room, with comfortable chairs, coffee table books and a charging point. For much of the year, and depending on guests' preferences, meals are taken outside under a shady tree.

With its pared-back old-school bush camp feel, it is one of the best choices in the Mara if you appreciate simple comfort.

A short distance away from the main area is a thatch-covered deck overlooking a salt lick frequented by all sorts of animals and birds. It's a lovely spot to sit with a pair of binoculars between game drives.

Drives to the Masai Mara Game Reserve are not encouraged as it can be an exhausting journey, but possibly worth it for anybody staying there for four nights or more, as it adds another dimension.

About This Area

Naboisho Conservancy is a conservation success story. It is a community conservancy comprised of land leased from 500 different local families and spans over 55,000 acres. Over the last two decades, wildlife numbers have increased, and predator numbers have bounced back to the point that Naboisho is one of the very best places in Africa to see predators. Access to the conservancy is limited, and the area boasts relatively low tourist numbers, making it easy to avoid the crowds. There is a good chance that you will have sightings to yourselves.  The conservancy, part of the Mara Serengeti ecosystem, offers a classic Mara landscape with rolling hills and open plains interspersed with small streams and patches of woodland. Plains game is excellent here, too, and elephant numbers are slowly returning. It is great country for walking, and it is also possible to do night drives.
